#InTheFrame: Alumni across the UK – Exeter

As we ask you to vote for the famous faces that should grace the walls of our brand new Hubs at Vita Student Newcastle and Glasgow, we take a look at some of the people that currently adorn the walls of our existing residences across the UK.

Here are two of the acclaimed faces you’ll find in the frame at Exeter:

Name:

J.K. Rowling

Education:

B.A (Hons) French and Classics 1986 – University of Exeter

Profession:

Novelist, screenwriter and film producer

A little about them:

Best known as the author of the Harry Potter fantasy series, J.K. Rowling is the United Kingdom’s best-selling living author, with sales in excess of £238 million.

The Harry Potter series became the best-selling book series and the second highest-grossing film series in history. Rowling had overall approval on all scripts and maintained creative control by acting as a producer on Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2, the final installment of the series.

Interesting fact:

Although she writes under the pen name “J.K. Rowling”, her name, before marriage, was “Joanne Rowling”. Anticipating that the target audience of young boys might not want to read a book by a woman, her publishers asked that she use two initials rather than her full name. She actually has no middle name, so chose “K” for Kathleen after her paternal grandmother.

Name:

Thom Yorke

Education:

B.A (Hons) English and Fine Arts 1991 – University of Exeter

Profession:

English musician, best known as the singer and principal songwriter of the alternative rock band Radiohead

A little about them:

As a multi-instrumentalist, Yorke mainly plays guitar and piano, but also plays instruments including keyboard, bass and drums. He is known for his falsetto vocals; in 2008 Rolling Stone magazine ranked him the 66th greatest singer of all time.

After he graduated from the University of Exeter, Radiohead signed to Parlophone. Radiohead’s early hit “Creep” made Yorke a celebrity and the band went on to achieve critical acclaim and sales of over 30 million albums.

Interesting fact:

Thom was born with a paralysed left eye, and underwent five eye operations by the age of six.
