How students really feel about student accommodation

Choosing to study at university is a huge life decision. We’d even call it a leap of faith.

Because as a student, you’ve already been through so much before your first day at university arrives.

You’ve worked hard at school to get the grades. You’ve probably had to turn down a few social plans. There’s most certainly been sleepless nights and tearful moments.

But above all, you’ve made the decision to commit years of your life to yourself. To chase your ambition. To build a bright future for yourself.

After all that dedication, the last thing you need is to learn the hard way. To arrive at your chosen student accommodation to find out it’s not what you thought it would be.

Unfortunately, that’s an all-too-common occurrence for a lot of university students. Whether it’s purpose-built student accommodation or a private rental property, students are let down far too often by their choice of housing.

No more settling for less. Today, we’re addressing the elephant in the room.

Here’s how UK students really feel about accommodation in 2026, and how Vita Student bridges the gap to bring you the student life you actually imagined.

What student accommodation really looks like in 2026

If there’s one thing the 2026 National Student Accommodation Survey from Save The Student highlights, it’s that your choice of student accommodation is one of the most important decisions you’ll ever make at university.

Courses can be changed. Terms can be deferred. But once you’ve signed the rental contract with a private landlord, you could be locked to accommodation you hate for an entire academic year.

The sad reality is that below-par student accommodation is still commonplace in the UK. Just look at the stats.

65% of UK students living in private housing say they’ve had at least one problem with their accommodation. Damp (30%) is still the biggest issue students face, followed by a lack of heating (25%). Unsurprisingly, this has left 41% of students feeling like their accommodation is ‘poor value for money’.

A market that rushes decisions

Choosing where you spend your time outside of lectures is a decision that shouldn’t be rushed.

It’s essential to get a feel for the place. Gather a sense of the people that live there. Suss out the location and how convenient it is for campus commuting.

However, Save The Student found that 35% of UK students rented their student home without viewing it first, due to the student housing shortage.

What happened to sleeping on things?

That’s why here at Vita Student, we offer you the opportunity to book a viewing at all of our buildings. This is the perfect chance for you to explore our spaces, speak with our team, and get a real feel for what your life could look like.

No commitments. No pressure. Just our way of showing you what you could be part of.

Why students drop out of uni

Of course, there are many reasons why students drop out. Some of them personal. Some simply down to a change of heart.

But there is a clear theme. And the lack of quality private student housing is at the centre of it.

Save the Student’s money expert Tom Allingham says the university housing shortage is forcing students to make “unenviable decisions.”

“Students are having to queue outside estate agents, sometimes overnight, just to secure viewings,” he added.

Many international students arriving in the UK for the first time aren’t aware of the scarcity of quality private housing. It’s that classic “Instagram VS reality” moment. Your room doesn’t match the pictures. Your rent doesn’t match what’s in front of you. It’s a horrible moment of reckoning that no student should have to go through, especially for international students arriving in the UK for the first time.

At Vita Student, we’re even better in real life.

Our private ensuite studios and shared spaces are thoughtfully designed, regularly maintained, and well-loved by our global community.

There’s no nasty surprises around here. It’s the five-star living experience you deserve.

The impact on student wellbeing

Here’s one that isn’t talked about enough but very important to acknowledge.

Loneliness is something a lot of UK students experience. 33%, in fact.

A 2026 study by Aldermore found that 39% of students in the UK feel “socially disconnected” from their peers due to their housing situation. More than a third of respondents admit to going an entire day without having an in-person interaction with anyone.

Sadly, it doesn’t end there.

Out of those, 73% are seeing their grades suffer, and 63% have considered dropping out of university altogether.

But there is a silver lining.

48% of students say that living in shared student accommodation helps to mitigate their feelings of loneliness. Similarly, 39% of those also say that their flatmate relationships boost their mental health.

At Vita Student, we know how important the friendships you make at university are. But we also know that finding connections can be daunting, especially for more introverted students.

Our Hub spaces are designed to make socialising fun, not forced. They’re warm, open and welcoming. Whether you’re chilling on the couch, working at a desk or seated to enjoy your breakfast, there’s so much opportunity to strike up a conversation with others.

Not to mention, we host events nearly every single day to ensure your social calendar is fully stacked. From craft workshops and cooking classes, to shopping trips, headliner parties and VIP brand experiences, there’s so much to get involved in.

A better way to live

Here at Vita Student, we’re the student life you actually imagined.
