Coventry is one of the fastest-growing cities in the country, yet it still sparkles with historic charm.

It’s small enough to promise a genuine sense of community, but with two top-rated universities, it’s also bustling with things for students to do.

It’s old and new, peaceful and vibrant – a city jam-packed with surprises. So, finding the best base from which to enjoy every angle of Coventry life is top of the list for most students.

Whether you’re studying at Warwick or the University of Coventry itself, this is your guide to choosing the best student area to call home in and around the city.

Canley

South-west of the city, a little way out, you’ll find Canley.

This neighbourhood crops up a lot as a favourite option for students at Warwick University. And no prizes for guessing why.

Essentially, Canley is the next-door-neighbour to Warwick’s campus.

That means rolling out of bed at 8.30am, grabbing a coffee enroute, and still making your 9am lecture with time to spare. It’s also reassuringly close to the Tesco Superstore.

If you’re looking for a halfway house between first-year halls and independent living, Canley is your choice.

But, if you’re ready to spread your wings, you’ll want to consider other options.

Canley might be convenient for Warwick University, but there’s a lot more to uni life than speedwalking to seminars in record time (and late-night supermarket runs).

Without the indie shops, local cafés, nightlife, and museums of other neighbourhoods, Canley will feel too residential for some students.

Average commuting times from Canley:

University of Warwick: 9-min walk

University of Coventry: 16-min bus

Earlsdon

This characterful district is best-known by its rows of red-brick Victorian terraces. It boasts a community feel, with its own restaurants, pubs, and shops, despite not being too far from Coventry centre.

Happily, it’s also fairly close to War Memorial Park, the largest green space in the city. When sunny days roll around, you’ll be glad to have this quiet gem a 15-minute walk away.

In satisfying a middle ground between Warwick University and Coventry, however, Earlsdon falls short by not being particularly close to either university.

And, while there’s more to keep you entertained here than in Canley, you can’t quite claim to have Coventry’s real attractions on your doorstep.

Family-friendly Earlsdon works well for quiet days and slow weekends, but if you’re longing to be in the thick of city life, you’ll still feel somewhat removed from it here.

Average commuting times from Earlsdon:

University of Warwick: 19-min bus

University of Coventry: 29-min walk

Royal Leamington Spa

Leamington – or, to give it its wonderfully fancy full name, Royal Leamington Spa – is a pretty Regency town south of Coventry.

It’s not technically part of the city, so it might feel like a rogue choice for accommodation, but over the years it’s become something of a hub for students living out.

Why?

Residents love its café culture, boutique shops and reliable restaurants, neatly arranged down long, wide boulevards.

Most of all, the more students move here, the more it attracts next year’s classes looking for a spot in the community.

It’s certainly a tempting choice, but make sure you’re clued up on those commuting times before you commit.

Yes, there’s plenty going on in Leamington, but at around half an hour’s travel time into uni (room on the bus depending), there’s no way you can simply nip home between lectures. Plus, if you have course mates living in halls or in Coventry itself, being so far out can be isolating.

And one more word of advice: as such a popular student area, you’ll need to be quick off the mark to bag the best accommodation in town if you do decide to move to Leamington.

Average commuting times from Royal Leamington Spa:

University of Warwick: 27-minute bus

University of Coventry: 35-minute bus / 24-minute walk and a train

City centre

You’re living in Coventry… so, why not live in Coventry?

City-centre accommodation is the right option for anyone who wants to discover this storied city at its heart.

Here, you’ve got the likes of FarGo Village right around the corner, for makers markets, street food, and artisan shops.

Or take a break from studying and pop into one of the city’s top cultural attractions, like the Transport Museum, Coventry Cathedral, or the Herbert Art Gallery.

And, when it’s time to catch up with uni mates over a pint and some classic British pub grub, you’re spoilt for choice between some of the oldest (and dare we say it, most whimsical) pubs in the country – let alone the city.

The real pull of city-centre living, though, is that you don’t need to compromise on anything when it comes to balancing study and play: from Vita Student Copper Towers, Coventry University is less than 15 minutes to walk to, and a 10-minute shuttle bus will pick you up and drop you off at Warwick University every weekday, door-to-door.

City-centre accommodation is also your ticket to exploring the rest of the UK. A short stroll to Coventry station, and you can hop on a train to London in an hour and Manchester in two.

For students looking for spacious studios, a ready-made community, and unbeatable amenities (think 24/7 gym, bookable study rooms, and weekday breakfasts) Copper Towers is your answer, right in Coventry’s buzzing centre.

Average commuting times from Copper Towers:
