Why study in Edinburgh?

Edinburgh is one of the most magnificent cities in Europe. Gothic architecture towers over as you roam the cobblestoned streets and hidden staircases. The hills in the distance breathe tranquillity into this small but busy city.

An enchanting blend of history and modernity, it’s easy to see why Edinburgh ranks in the top 20 best student cities in the world.

Edinburgh is not only known for its dramatic architecture and ancient history. It hosts multiple famous festivals every year – like Edinburgh Fringe, Edinburgh International Film Festival, and more.

It is the birthplace of the Harry Potter books, the first encyclopaedia, and some of the world’s most respected writers. Edinburgh is a place that, by its very nature, inspires big ideas – and its prestigious universities only proves this.

“cosy up in a medieval pub”

Edinburgh may be a compact city, but there is a hell of a lot going on.

Take a walk down the famous Royal Mile and spend the day in boutique shops and artisan bakeries. At night, cosy up with a pint in a medieval pub or dance the night away in the many bars and clubs on George Street.

“immerse yourself in the rich culture.”

Educate yourself in the National Museum of Scotland. Entertain yourself at Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Get a taste of what Scotland is really about at The Scotch Whiskey Experience in Edinburgh’s Old Town. There are so many ways to immerse yourself in the rich culture and history that this city offers.

"Panoramic views of Edinburgh.”

Despite being amongst the city’s action, you’re surrounded by rolling hills and peaceful nature. Walk out of the door of Vita Student and make your way to Arthur’s Seat, where you can get a panoramic view of Edinburgh in all its glory.

Edinburgh has loads of free attractions that allow you to have a fun day out, even on a tight budget. Simply walking around the city is an attraction – you could walk around all day admiring the beautiful architecture and cobblestoned streets.
However, we recommend that the first place you walk is the Royal Mile – a long road that used to be the designated walkway for Kings and Queens. From there, visit The Scottish National Portrait Gallery, The Royal Botanical Gardens, and St Giles Cathedral, all for free.

  3. Are there any outdoor spaces I should visit?
    more

The city of Edinburgh is beautiful, especially since it’s surrounded by breath-taking nature and outdoor space. From the city centre, hike up Arthur’s Seat and get a panoramic view of the city. It takes about two hours to get to the top, but it’s worth it.
Further afield, you can get to Pentland Hills – a vast landscape with plenty of walking routes for different abilities. If you’re looking for a relaxing place to sit and study, however, all you need to do is head to the city centre and go to The Meadows.

  5. What is the history behind Edinburgh’s architecture?
    more

Edinburgh’s architecture tells a story of a historical city moving with the times. The Old Town was founded in the 12th century – walking through the streets you can feel its medieval history – dark, Gothic buildings with complex stonework are at every corner. However, in the new town, you get a taste of the modern, even though buildings in this area date back to the 1700s. The New Town was built because the Old Town was full – so was used to house wealthy businessmen.
