Go on then, we’ll admit it. Newcastle has a well-earned reputation for a great night out.
But that’s not the only – or even the most important – reason why this northern city attracts bucketloads of students every year (in fact, one sixth of Newcastle’s population is students).
Along with two top-ranking universities, jaw-dropping coastlines, and a jam-packed itinerary of things to do, the real draw is that this is a city that’s easy to feel at home in.
With plenty of friendly, vibrant neighbourhoods across its relatively compact sprawl, there’s no doubt you’ll find your community.
To help you out, we’ve pulled together some of our favourites.
Jesmond
If you’ve been doing a bit of digging already, you’ll have come across Jesmond, arguably the most popular area for students.
Expect lively pubs and foodie favourites, many clustered around Osborne Road, the neighbourhood’s main thoroughfare. If you’re keen to seek out green spaces, it’s not too far to the Town Moor to the west and Jesmond Dene to the north, either.
Having said that, bear in mind that Jesmond is further out from the main university campuses than other areas, as well as the buzz of the city centre. This might be where students flock to, but for a real flavour of Newcastle’s beating heart, you’ll want to cast your net a little more centrally.
It’s also a largely residential area. This means that Jesmond has no shortage of homes for Newcastle’s booming student population, but many of them are big house shares.
If you prefer your own space (and a guaranteed clean, clutter-free haven to retreat to after a long day at uni), you might do better looking elsewhere.

Sandyford
Don’t be fooled by its name: Sandyford isn’t a seaside spot by one of Newcastle’s gorgeous sandy beaches.
But it is an increasingly sought-after area for students.
This neighbourhood is often thought of as a middle ground. It’s set a little way from the city centre, so it feels more residential at heart, but you can still walk to the university campuses in under 20 minutes.
It’s a quieter, more relaxed choice, woven together from Newcastle’s iconic rows of red-brick terraces. Nonetheless, you’ll find a healthy smattering of independent cafés, shops and bars dotted around the neighbourhood.
There’s a real mix of accommodation in Sandyford – most of it house shares – and the nicest ones will get snapped up quickly. You’ll need to be ready and organised to secure one of the better choices before they’re gone!

Heaton
Heaton is a more affordable choice compared with Jesmond especially, and it’s still got heaps going for it.
Amongst the neat lines of Victorian terraces there are some top eateries, growing in number along with the student population (fuelling those late-night library sessions is a must, after all!). You’ll find many a characterful café and cosy pub in Heaton.
As a more suburban spot, though, Heaton’s somewhat removed from the spirited rhythm of the city centre.
It’s a good 40-minute walk to the main shops and cultural hubs of Newcastle, and a similar plod to the university campuses. Make sure you’re happy jumping on metros and buses before you find a house in Heaton.

Let’s be honest, people come to Newcastle for its vibrant city culture.
So, why not be right in the thick of it?

Leazes is right around the corner from Newcastle’s historic Grainger Town (for weekend treasure-hunting), along with sweeping Grey Street and its lively shops and restaurants – often celebrated as one of the most beautiful streets in the UK.
But you only have to head a few minutes up the road to reach the university campuses, or to discover a peaceful breath of fresh air at nearby Leazes Park.
