Student accommodation in Madrid isn’t up to scratch. Vita Student Oria is changing the narrative.

It’s no secret that student residences in Spain have a pretty bad reputation. Many students still end up living in colegios mayores (the closest equivalent to UK university halls), where they’re expected to lead a much more traditional student lifestyle.

These outdated residences are often linked to religious organisations, and come with strict rules such as curfews, behavioural expectations, and in some cases, even gender restrictions. For a lot of students, this environment feels overbearing, restrictive and unsupportive. And it’s becoming a wider conversation.

Students have taken their experiences to the realms of Reddit, sharing anecdotes and connecting with other students over the cultural rigidity of this environment.

Recent data also paints a concerning picture.

Research from Savills highlights a ‘scarcity of high-quality, modern student housing’ across the country. Even more strikingly? 49% of PBSA in Spain ‘fails to meet modern standards.’ That’s no small gap. That’s nearly half of student residences ignoring ‘the needs of today’s university population’… until now.

Not only is quality falling short, there’s a huge shortage in rooms, too. A 2026 report from GPI Europe shows that while there are 108,600 beds available, more than 655,000 students require accommodation. Researchers also found that the number of international students studying in Spain has grown by 10% since 2029. Madrid is the city in the highest demand, hosting more than 310,000 university students from across the world.
